“FC St. Pauli is not just a football club, it’s a way of life.” A powerful book, St. Pauli: Another Football is Possible covers the highs and lows of supporting the Hamburg club. From fighting fascism to the story of the club’s birth and the social dynamics of Germany’s second largest city by population, this book is as much about politics as it is about football.
St. Pauli: Another Football is Possible does an excellent job of telling the story “of a football club that is about more than just trophies and star signings.” An economic crisis in the 1980s almost resulted in the club disappearing. There was no money to sign prominent players and the club went through a transition from a traditional club to a cult club in an era that coincided with the boom in the “squatting-linked autonomous movement.”
This book also covers Fußball Gegen Nazis, their relationship with Celtic as well as social romantics trying to reclaim the club. St. Pauli: Another Football is Possible is a book that further expands on material already out there and if you want an in-depth look at St. Pauli, this does an excellent job of that.
